Marketing Automation Software in 2026

Marketing automation is useful when a business needs to coordinate more than a broadcast or a short email sequence. A representative workflow might segment a new contact, react to behavior, change a score, create or update a CRM record, alert sales, stop messages after conversion, and report the result.

This guide compares four different starting points using official pricing and product documentation reviewed on July 19, 2026. Clearpick has not completed hands-on tests of all four platforms. Pricing shown on this page was checked against each vendor’s official pricing page on September 8, 2026, and every figure is sourced in the table above. Capabilities are vendor-reported unless stated otherwise, and the page does not name a universal winner.

If your requirement is newsletters, promotional campaigns, list management, or straightforward sequences, use the separate email marketing guide. This page is reserved for multi-step automation, data movement, lifecycle control, and sales or commerce handoffs.

1. ActiveCampaign: Contact-Based Automation Shortlist

ActiveCampaign publishes Starter, Plus, Professional, and Enterprise plans. Its current FAQ says pricing starts at $15 for accounts with fewer than 1,000 contacts.

The plan boundary matters:

  • Starter is limited to one included user, a maximum of 25,000 contacts, and five actions per automation.
  • Plus adds a broader set of triggers and actions, multichannel automation, landing pages, web push, permissions, and other functions.
  • Professional includes three users and adds advanced triggers, segmentation, reporting, connected automations, conditional content, predictive sending, and attribution functions.
  • Enterprise includes five users and adds functions including SSO, custom reporting, premium integrations, and dedicated support.

ActiveCampaign’s own current comparison content publishes these prices at 10,000 contacts: Starter $149, Plus $189, Professional $375, and Enterprise $589 per month. The entry price and the 10,000-contact price should not be compared without preserving the plan name and automation limits.

Put ActiveCampaign on the shortlist when: a team needs multi-step marketing automation and is willing to price contacts, automation depth, seats, CRM add-ons, SMS, and reporting separately.

Verify in a trial: entry and exit conditions, branching, wait logic, re-entry, scoring, deal actions, field mapping, duplicate handling, permissions, suppression, attribution, export, and the cost at the next contact tier.

Check ActiveCampaign’s current plan definitions and pricing FAQ.

2. HubSpot Marketing Hub: CRM-Connected Evaluation

HubSpot Marketing Hub uses editions, Core Seats, marketing-contact tiers, onboarding, and optional capacity or feature add-ons. Non-marketing contacts can remain in the CRM without counting toward the paid marketing-contact tier, but they cannot be targeted with marketing emails or ads.

Current public base pricing is:

  • Starter: starts at $20 per seat per month and includes 1,000 marketing contacts.
  • Professional: starts at $890 per month, includes three Core Seats and 2,000 marketing contacts, and requires $3,000 one-time onboarding.
  • Enterprise: starts at $3,600 per month, includes five Core Seats and 10,000 marketing contacts, and requires $7,000 one-time onboarding.

The functional gap is large. Starter provides up to 10 automated actions for form automation. Professional adds unlimited actions and omni-channel workflows; its pricing page lists up to 300 workflows for 10 teams. Enterprise increases governance and workflow limits.

HubSpot publishes additional contact-block rates in its Product & Services Catalog. Because blocks, edition, seat commitment, onboarding, and annual terms interact, use HubSpot’s checkout or written quote for the final total rather than extrapolating a single “per contact” number.

Put HubSpot on the shortlist when: the CRM contact, company, deal, campaign, and marketing objects are intended to share one HubSpot data model.

Verify in a demo: which objects and events trigger workflows, marketing-contact status changes, monthly update timing, contact tier downgrades, seats, email-send multiples, scoring, attribution, sandbox needs, permissions, API limits, onboarding, and complete export.

Check HubSpot Marketing Hub pricing and the official product and contact-price catalog.

3. Klaviyo: Commerce Event and Profile Shortlist

Klaviyo’s free plan supports up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends per month, plus a small mobile-message allowance. It includes campaigns, automations, segmentation, and reporting within those limits.

Paid marketing prices depend on the selected active-profile and message volumes. Klaviyo exposes those combinations through its pricing builder rather than one stable price for all businesses. Preserve the active-profile range, email allowance, SMS or mobile-message assumptions, service products, and any promotional discount when recording a price.

Klaviyo’s differentiating question is not whether it can send email. It is whether the commerce event stream is complete and trustworthy enough to drive flows and reporting.

Put Klaviyo on the shortlist when: product, browse, cart, checkout, order, fulfillment, and customer events are central to the marketing program.

Verify in a trial: storefront and data-platform integration, profile merge rules, consent by channel, anonymous-to-known identity, catalog fields, order edits, refunds, subscriptions, historical sync, event delays, flow re-entry, attribution settings, active-profile suppression, exports, and price at peak seasonal volume.

Check Klaviyo’s current pricing builder and free-plan limits.

4. Brevo: Send-Volume-Oriented Shortlist

Brevo publishes five plan levels:

  • Free: $0, 300 daily email sends, storage for up to 100,000 contacts, and marketing automation for up to 2,000 contacts.
  • Starter: from $9 per month.
  • Standard: from $18 per month.
  • Professional: from $499 per month.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing.

The current model is not simply “unlimited contacts.” On paid Starter and Standard tiers, the monthly email volume selected also sets a contact-storage limit. Brevo lists, for example, 5,000 monthly sends with up to 500 stored contacts, 10,000 sends with up to 1,500, and 15,000 sends with up to 2,500. Higher send tiers can support more contacts. Reaching a contact limit can trigger an automatic upgrade to the next tier.

Starter emails display Brevo branding unless the $9-per-month removal add-on is purchased. Extra marketing seats, sales packages, dedicated IP, SSO, SMS, WhatsApp, and other options are separately priced or limited by plan.

Put Brevo on the shortlist when: send volume, stored contacts, automation eligibility, and multiple communication channels can be modeled precisely.

Verify in a trial: contact and automation limits, automatic tier upgrades, branding, seats, send credits, unused-credit expiry, transactional versus marketing streams, CRM and sales add-ons, consent, dedicated IP readiness, reporting, export, and annual cancellation terms.

Check Brevo’s current plans, limits, and add-ons.

Cost Check at 1,000, 10,000, and 50,000 Contacts

The table below records only prices that can be supported directly by the current official pages. “Calculator required” is more accurate than copying a stale third-party figure.

This is not a feature-equivalent comparison. For example, HubSpot Starter and Professional do not provide the same workflow capabilities, and ActiveCampaign Starter caps each automation at five actions. Klaviyo and Brevo pricing also depends on message volume, not contact count alone.

Use one complete cost scenario

For each finalist, record:

  • 1,000, 10,000, and 50,000 marketable or active contacts;
  • campaigns per month and average recipients;
  • automated messages per contact and peak-month multiplier;
  • SMS, WhatsApp, push, transactional email, or other channels;
  • required marketing, sales, admin, analyst, and view-only users;
  • automation actions, workflows, branches, and active contacts in journeys;
  • landing pages, forms, domains, brands, business units, and environments;
  • CRM, ecommerce, warehouse, ad, and support integrations;
  • onboarding, migration, dedicated IP, support, API, and reporting add-ons;
  • annual commitment, overage, automatic upgrade, downgrade, and exit terms.

Save a timestamped quote or checkout result for each contact tier. A pricing page’s “starts at” figure is not a total-cost result.

A Workflow Test That Works Across the Four Platforms

Use synthetic contacts and a test domain. Do not upload a production list until data-processing, consent, security, and access requirements have been reviewed.

Setup

  1. Create contact fields for source, persona, lifecycle stage, product interest, region, and consent.
  2. Connect a fictional CRM pipeline or test store.
  3. Build a form or event that enrolls the contact.
  4. Create a dynamic segment that excludes ineligible or suppressed contacts.

Automation

  1. Send a first message after the trigger.
  2. Branch on one behavioral event and one contact attribute.
  3. Update a score or lifecycle field.
  4. Create or update a deal, task, or internal notification.
  5. Exit the contact after a fictional conversion.
  6. Prevent immediate re-entry and repeated sends.

Failure and reporting

  1. Change an email address and test profile deduplication.
  2. Disconnect the CRM or storefront and inspect failure alerts.
  3. Unsubscribe the contact from one channel and verify downstream sync.
  4. Correct a conversion or refund and inspect attribution changes.
  5. Export the contact, events, campaign activity, automation history, and consent state.

Record steps completed, time, observed limits, sync delay, failures, add-ons needed, and which results were only demonstrated by the vendor. Clearpick has not run this test across all four products for this page.

CRM and Data Architecture Questions

Marketing automation fails when two systems silently own the same field. Create a map before migration:

Object or fieldSystem of recordSync directionConflict ruleDelete/retain rule
Contact identity and email
Company/account
Lifecycle stage
Lead score
Consent and lawful basis
Deal/opportunity
Product and catalog
Order, refund, subscription
Campaign membership
Unsubscribe and suppression

Ask whether deletes, merges, hard bounces, global suppressions, contact-status changes, and consent updates travel in both directions. “Native integration” does not prove that every object and edge case is supported.

The platform can provide authentication controls, suppression lists, preference centers, and monitoring, but the sender remains responsible for list acquisition, consent, content, cadence, authentication, complaints, and applicable law.

Before launch:

  • authenticate each sending domain using the records and alignment the program requires;
  • separate marketing and transactional streams where appropriate;
  • import consent source, time, scope, and proof—not only an email address;
  • define suppression precedence across platforms and channels;
  • warm up sending patterns based on the provider’s current guidance;
  • monitor bounces, complaints, blocks, and unexpected volume changes;
  • document who can export contacts, change consent, or enable an automation.

Independent deliverability studies can be useful context, but inbox placement varies by sender reputation, list, content, authentication, volume, and recipient provider. Do not turn a benchmark into a guaranteed product ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best marketing automation software for a small business?

There is no universal best platform. ActiveCampaign is a relevant shortlist option for multi-step automation with contact-based pricing. HubSpot is relevant when marketing automation and its CRM data model need to be evaluated together. Klaviyo is designed around commerce profiles, events, and orders. Brevo is relevant when email volume is a stronger cost driver than list size. Test the same workflow and price the same assumptions.

How much does marketing automation software cost?

Entry prices checked on July 19, 2026 include ActiveCampaign from $15 for fewer than 1,000 contacts, HubSpot Marketing Hub Starter from $20 per seat per month with 1,000 marketing contacts, Brevo Starter from $9 per month, and a Klaviyo free plan up to 250 active profiles and 500 emails per month. These entry points do not provide equivalent automation depth or capacity.

What is the difference between email marketing and marketing automation?

Email marketing focuses on creating, sending, and measuring email campaigns. Marketing automation coordinates rules and state across a lifecycle, such as segmentation, behavioral triggers, branching, scoring, CRM updates, sales handoff, and exits after conversion. A business that only needs newsletters and simple sequences should compare email marketing software rather than pay for wider orchestration.

Which marketing automation software is designed for B2B?

HubSpot and ActiveCampaign are relevant B2B shortlist options because they connect marketing activity with contact, company, deal, scoring, and handoff workflows. The correct choice depends on the CRM system of record, automation actions, data model, reporting, permissions, and total contact cost.

Which marketing automation software is designed for ecommerce?

Klaviyo is built around commerce profiles, catalog and order events, segmentation, campaigns, and flows. Brevo and ActiveCampaign also publish ecommerce integrations. Validate the exact storefront, event schema, identity matching, consent sync, order adjustments, catalog fields, attribution, and historical-data import before choosing.

Can marketing automation replace a CRM?

Sometimes the same platform contains both functions, but they are not interchangeable. Define the system of record for contacts, companies, deals, activities, audiences, and consent, then test two-way synchronization before attempting to replace a CRM.
